Christchurch City Council Swim Teachers Fundraise for WABC 2007

It’s exciting to hear what’s happening around New Zealand as some people are going to extraordinary lengths to make sure they will be in Wellington for the World Aquatic Babies Congress 2007.

Melissa Parker, Swimsmart Coordinator at Pioneer & Centennial Leisure Centre’s tells us:

“When I first heard that WABC was coming to Wellington I thought what an amazing opportunity to attend this once in a lifetime experience. I also mentioned this great conference to my staff to see if anyone was interested in attending as well. Six staff approached me in 2006 to say they wanted to attend. Unfortunately my budget doesn’t stretch for all of us to attend so we decided to start fundraising!”

“We have been involved in plenty of different activities and have even got the whole swim school behind us as parents see the value in our swim instructors attending!”

Some of our other fundraising has included:

  • Raffles – with a significant number of prizes donated by parents!

  • Sausage Sizzles, which are a great fundraiser. We have a big facility and it is extremely popular especially on Friday nights.

  • We have also had pub fundraisers where people can buy tickets to a private function for $5 and receive cheap drinks for 5 hours.

  • Our latest fundraising activity was held in conjunction with the Canterbury Model Railway. We sold tickets to ride the trains and of course this got the whole swim school involved!

Our main aim is to pay for everyone’s conference costs. At the moment we are just over half way!

We’re definitely on our way. See you in October!!
